As we get closer to days of river rafting, boating, picnics at the lake or river, it is time to make sure we have an effective sunscreen to take along. We do need to take care not to over-expose our skin to the sun. However, our bodies manufacture Vitamin D from sun exposure so some sun is not all bad. The suggestion is to get 10 to 15 minutes of exposure to sunshine without sunscreen 3 times a week. This along with diet sources of Vitamin D maintains healthy levels of this vitamin. While it may be confusing to pick an adequate and efficient sunsreen product, here is some information that will help; Read the label and determine if the active ingredients are absorptive or reflective blockers. Most sunscreens use chemicals to absorb UV rays while some use minerals to reflect the UV rays. Chemicals used to absorb UV rays break down into by-products that can cause allergic reactions and, some research is showing damage to the cell's DNA. Current research supports the use of products with reflectants such as titanium dioxide and zine oxide. These minerals when micronized do not have the white appearance that some of us might remember as the "swimmer's nose". The sun protection factor (SPF) should be considered truly effective when in the range of 15 to 30. Higher SPF's have increased levels of the chemicals in question and this added protection turns out to be insignificant.
